Model Bar Refaeli Sports a Bellybutton Ring

Body jewellery and piercings have been around for millenia, with body art popping up in tribes living in places as diverse as South America and Africa, and acknowledged as some of man’s earliest body adornments. Only recently, however, have piercings obtained widespread acceptance in modern Western society. While some piercings, like the tongue or nipple, still have a whiff of the rebellious, others–like, say, the bellybutton ring–have become so popular that not even super strict parents or conservative adults are ruffled by them. One of the main reasons that many body piercings have become so mainstream are the proliferation of these kinds of body jewellery on celebrities from songbird Christina Aguilera to tween queen Miley Cyrus.

Celebrities that show off their body jewellery on stage, in music videos and fashion magazines, as well as on the runway, red carpet and in ads have changed the way society as a whole looks at body piercings. Where once the only acceptable piercings for a lady would have been one piercing in each ear today the outlook has totally changed. Perhaps inspired by celebrities like Pink and Nicole Richie (who reportedly set of an airport metal detector with her’s) teens and young women are not only piercing their ears but also their cartiladge, noses and bellybuttons.

Three Stars Bellybutton Ring

There seems to be several reasons why body jewellery is so hot these days. One advantage to most piercings is that they’re easily removed if you ever do tire of them. For a younger person who may change their mind later in life, body piercings are not as permanent a commitment as a tattoo–and are much less painful to remove! Another reason that piercings are so popular is that they’re a distinct way to express yourself. Choosing where to get your piercings and the body jewellery you want to display is something personal that tells people about you. Using piercing as a form of self expression is something that seems to appeal to the younger set especially.

The list of celebrities that sport piercings is long and varied including rock stars, actors and models. Stars who have bellybutton piercings include Britney Spears, Alyssa Milano, Lindsay Lohan and Keira Knightley. You’ve likely noticed nose piercings on celebrities such as Kelly Clarkson, Scarlett Johnansson and singer Kelis. Fergie from The Black Eyed Peas is only one of many who sports an eyebrow ring. Really, the list of celebrities that have opted for body piercings is endless and just goes to show not only how popular, but also how accepted, piercings now are. When Disney Channel stars like Miley Cyrus proudly sport their piercings it’s pretty much official that the trend has been accepted by the masses.

While Hollywood starlets might be able to get away with crazy outfits and gaudy fashion accessories, Spears’ new fashion label offers women a look they can pull off in public.

A new law should be in place: every clothing and fashion accessories label backed by a Hollywood starlet should have a tag on every piece of their product line that reads, “Warning! Product may make you look ridiculous in public.” Time and time again, we see young Hollywood actresses capitalizing on their celebrity status by branding a new fashion line with their name. Doing this not only creates a new income stream for an actress whose mediocre talents and fresh face offer little more than a diminishing return year and after year.

For average young women, these brands become a way of feeling famous by wearing the same earrings, jeans, or shoes that they saw said actress or pop star wearing in the latest red carpet photo session.

Typically, however, these clothing and fashion accessories brands just don’t work for the average young woman.
