In a world where fashion lines tend to error on the side of being too artsy, the new clothes and fashion accessories coming out of Tokyo
are rich on “tacky,” short on “trendy.”
No culture in the world makes the “oddity” news more than Japan. From marrying anime characters and robots to obsessing over gadgets, you can find a quirky article about Asia’s most eccentric island culture almost every week. And to be sure, Japanese culture has given the world a bevy of amazing inventions and products: Nintendo, affordable cars, digital wrist watches, cuisine, and even some interesting fashion accessories and trends.
The new fashion trend coming out of Tokyo, however, leaves a lot to be desired.
Labeled “Japanese street fashion,” this new trend of mis-matched clothes and fashion accessories is a mish-mosh of quirky vintage clothes and punk-inspired themes. The overall theme of this new trend seems to be a cross between Madonna’s look circa Desperately Seeking Susan and Sid Viscous vis a vis The Sex Pistols: the creative thrust behind Japanese street fashion is simple: find a bunch of clothes and fashion accessories that a) you would never be caught dead wearing, and b) don’t coordinate with one another, and have the guts to wear it all together.
